Māori and Pasifika Students Winter Internship
In conjunction with Te Pūtāiki: Māori Law Students' Association and Pasifika Law Students' Society, we offer a two week internship during the winter University break.
The internship is available to current Māori and Pasifika UC Law students in their third year or above for those students only studying law, and fourth year and above for those students studying double degrees.
It is well known that Māori and Pasifika are over represented as defendants and victims in the criminal justice system. It is important that prosecutors are representative of the community which they serve. At present, Māori and Pasifika are under represented when it comes to lawyers working in the justice system. Raymond Donnelly is committed to helping address under representation of Māori and Pasifika lawyers working in criminal justice.
The ideal candidates will be studying towards an LLB, have a strong academic record, excellent written and analytical skills, the ability and motivation to deliver high-quality legal services to the community and a strong commitment and passion for criminal justice. This is a paid internship and will appeal to those interested in criminal law and considering a career as a prosecutor.
Interns will undertake a wide variety of duties and have the opportunity to observe a wide range of work within the criminal justice system including:
Observing District Court and/or High Court trials;
Observing a variety of hearings in the High Court and District Court;
Assisting in the preparation of written submissions for pre-trial matters and sentencing; and
Conducting legal research.
